A thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist painting usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. 
The painting of thangkas was an important and highly developed means of expression through which the entire Buddhist philosophy could be explained.
Thangkas were intended for personal meditation or instruction of monastic students. These examples are on a brocade-type woven fabric.
Vajrasattva Buddha - Vajrasattva is the "Lord of the Mandalas." He is the union of the hundred peaceful and wrathful deities and is the supreme deity of purification.

Mandala - The Tibetan mandala is a tool for gaining wisdom and compassion and generally is depicted as a tightly balanced, geometric composition wherein deities reside. The principal deity is housed in the center. The mandala serves as a tool for guiding individuals along the path to enlightenment.
