This simple, elegant dish is comforting to hold and behold. Its gentle green salt glaze is timeless, complemented by the elegant curves of the lid and handles.
Rita Redner’s formal training was at Sheridan College School of Design in the early 1970’s. While she was a student at Sheridan College, she was introduced to salt glazing and was attracted to the unique surface resulting from this firing technique.
In this technique, towards the end of the firing cycle, salt (sodium chloride) is introduced into the kiln. The sodium vapourizes throughout the kiln and reacts with the silica in the clay to produce a glassy surface, and the characteristic “orange peel” effect of salt glazed pottery.
Since 1986 Rita has maintained a studio practice in Brooke Valley, west of Perth Ontario. Her work is mostly wheel thrown stoneware and porcelain, often altered and sometimes reassembled.
