Originating as a simple thin belt in Heian period Japan, the obi developed over time into a belt with a number of different varieties, sizes and proportions, lengths, and methods of tying.
The first is a Hakata Obi which is a special silk weave, the design of which was originally created in Hakata area in Kyushu Island.
The Hakata's pattern design had been inspired by the shape of the traditional Dokko. Dokko is an instrument carried by Fudo Myo-Oh or the God of Fire (Acala) and it is still used by monks for Buddhist ceremonies to the present.
